If no amount of diet or exercise has reduced the appearance of excess fat in the chin and neck areas, liposuction may be right for you. Liposuction can target trouble spots, creating beautiful contours and definition throughout the body and face. To find out if chin and neck liposuction is right for you, schedule a consultation with San Francisco, CA plastic surgeon Kimberly Henry.
Chin and Neck Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove subcutaneous fat deposits from certain areas of the body. Liposuction is widely known as a way to contour the arms, thighs, and abdomen, but it may also be used to reduce fat within the chin and neck to improve facial definition.
The chin and neck liposuction procedure is a minor surgical treatment typically performed under general anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. Once the anesthesia takes effect, small incisions are made in the targeted areas. A suction tool, called a cannula, is inserted through these incisions. Fat is then gently and strategically vacuumed out of the chin and neck. The result is a smooth, slender, contoured chin and neck.
Recovery after Chin and Neck Liposuction
Chin and neck liposuction is less invasive than liposuction that is performed on other areas of the body, making recovery less painful and quicker. However, after treatment, patients may experience some pain, soreness, and swelling. Pain and discomfort generally reduces within a week or two. Any pain or discomfort felt after surgery can be relieved with surgeon approved pain medication. Additionally, patients often benefit from wearing a compression garment under the chin for a few days after surgery to help reduce swelling and encourage the skin to adjust to its new contours. Although patients will be well enough to return to work shortly after surgery, full results may not be completely noticeable for several weeks or months.
Candidates for Chin and Neck Liposuction
Candidates for chin and neck liposuction should be healthy enough to undergo surgery and be close to their ideal weight. Candidates also include those who experience one or more of the following issues:
- Unhappy with the appearance of a double chin
- Unhappy with the appearance of neck fat
- Unable to reduce fat deposits within the neck and chin with diet and exercise
Other Treatment Options
For some patients, liposuction alone may not be able to provide the full results they desire. Liposuction does not address loose, hanging skin. Those who wish to reduce both fat and sagging chin and neck tissue may be better suited to liposuction combined with facelift surgery.
There are different facelift techniques, allowing the procedure to be tailored to the unique needs of each patient. Many who wish to focus treatment on the chin and neck area benefit from lower facelift surgery, which targets the lower third of the face.
