Precise Eyelid Surgery Can Improve Vision and Help You Achieve an Overall Younger Look
Bright, wide-open eyes can affect the appearance of your whole face. They can also reflect your personality and make you seem friendly and inviting. However, as you get older, sagging skin around your eyes can dramatically impact your appearance. In some cases, severely drooping skin may even interfere with your vision. Fortunately, Kimberly Henry, MD, can perform a personalized eyelid lift at her San Francisco, CA-area practice. This procedure can reduce bags under your eyes or puffy eyelids, giving you a more youthful appearance. Dr. Henry uses precise techniques, so your results can be as subtle and natural-looking as possible. Most importantly, scarring is almost invisible, and the procedure is virtually risk-free.
Are You a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is designed to reverse the signs of aging around your eyes. For this reason, we typically recommend the treatment only if you are 35 or older. The treatment may be appropriate if you want to address cosmetic concerns such as:
- Under-eye bags
- Puffy upper lids
- A tired appearance
- Obscured vision due to drooping lids or excess fat in your eyelids
Dr. Henry will consider your ocular health when determining your eligibility for an eyelid lift. If you suffer from an eye condition, such as glaucoma or dry eye, surgery may not be appropriate. Additionally, as with all facial plastic surgery procedures, you should enjoy good physical health. Be sure to discuss any autoimmune diseases, blood disorders, or related conditions with Dr. Henry at your consultation.

The Eyelid Lift Procedure
You may choose blepharoplasty for your upper lids, lower lids, or both. Dr. Henry can help you determine the most appropriate and effective option at your initial consultation. She understands that you may feel embarrassed or self-conscious about your appearance. Her empathetic demeanor will set you at ease, and she can help you plan a procedure that could improve virtually all aspects of your life. Additionally, she is ready to address any concerns you may have and to answer any questions.
Before eyelid surgery, Dr. Henry will numb the area with a local anesthetic. Then she can create a small, hidden incision. For lower blepharoplasty, she may place the opening right along your lash line. She could also use a transconjunctival incision along the inside of your eyelid. Once these incisions have been created, she can remove the unwanted pockets of fat that create bags and puffiness underneath your eyes. Dr. Henry may also redistribute fat cells and tighten the nearby muscle. For upper blepharoplasty, the incision will typically run along your eyelid crease. Then the doctor can trim drooping skin and, if applicable, remove fat deposits. When she is finished, she can close the incisions with small, often dissolvable stitches.
Blepharoplasty Recovery and Results
Dr. Henry performs eyelid surgery on an outpatient basis, so you can go home just a few hours after your surgery. Nonetheless, you will need to take appropriate care of your eyes to avoid discomfort and to ensure proper healing. For the first several days, you should use cold compresses, ointments, and eye drops as directed. You should also sleep with your head propped up and avoid activities that may strain your eyes. A full recovery typically takes a few weeks. During this time, you should wear dark sunglasses whenever you go outside. You should also avoid strenuous activity that will promote blood flow to your eyes. Dr. Henry offers complete post-surgical care and can guide you as you return to your regular routine. You should be able to return to work within a week to ten days.
As your healing proceeds, you could soon notice the results of your surgery. Your eyes could appear more open and alert-looking. The skin beneath could also be smoother, making you appear several years younger. Your resulting sense of self-confidence could also have a significant impact on your life, and you may be open to new activities and social scenes. If you previously suffered from obscured vision, blepharoplasty can give you an unobstructed view of the world around you. In these cases, insurance may cover the cost of eyelid surgery. However, even if you choose an eyelid lift for cosmetic reasons, we offer CareCredit® and ALPHAEON® financing to help you cover your costs.
